“I don’t have time for self-care!”

"I don't have the time for self-care!" The truth is, many of us can relate. We have so much pulling us in all different directions, including caregiving, working, grocery shopping, chauffeuring children to different activities, checking emails...whew! I'm overwhelmed by just typing this list!

As a way to simplify the topic, here are four helpful categories:

Movement-Exercise can feel overwhelming, but thinking about daily movement may be a helpful start. Maybe you could stretch for a few minutes while you are in the shower, or explore a new park with your kids this weekend. Schedule times of movement throughout your week.

Sleep/Rest-We know that sleep is very important, but sometimes sleep is illusive for all of us. Staying in bed and fretting that you can't fall asleep is not helpful, but you can remind yourself that resting in bed is still rejuvenating. Keep a book you have been wanting to read by your bed or listen to calm music if you are unable to sleep.

Nutrition-Fueling your body each day is important. We can have a lot of unhelpful energy when it comes to food and our bodies. I would encourage you to be curious instead of judging yourself. Ask if you are nourishing your body, under-eating, or overeating. Practice chewing slowly to enjoy your food.

Social interactions-This might be the most challenging activity because of our lack of time, social anxiety, motivational challenges, just to name a few. Research continues to show, again and again, the importance of connecting with others regardless of the depth of interactions. Go to a coffee shop on a regular basis even if you don't have deep conversations. Text a friend a quick "thinking of you." Ask a coworker to take a walk during a lunch break. Don't wait for others to take the initiative. Be the one to reach out first!

As you read through these activities, is there one that is calling to you first?

Take a deep breath and decide to do that one thing at least once in the next 24-hours.

And then do it the next day.

And then the next.

You are starting the habit of self-care!
